A growing team

In February the team at Fiscale celebrated our third birthday. In just three years the company has grown from two, founders John Mayhew and Stephen Bunting, to a team of eighteen with further recruitment ongoing.

Expansion was so rapid in 2016 that we outgrew our original offices in Hollands Road, Haverhill and had to move to larger premises. We took over the first floor of Smithfield House in Rookwood Way, Haverhill in August 2016.

Growth is a 'quality problem' and is proof of the increasing demand we are experiencing for specialist advice on the R&D Tax Credits scheme.

Could it be that after 16 years since the introduction of R&D Tax Credits businesses are finally beginning to trust that this is one initiative that definitely is not too good to be true?

Without wishing to sound too cynical the reality is quite different. The increase in our client base is being driven by the robust relationships we have developed with our existing clients and referrers, such as accountants and professional advisors. Most clients refer friends or suppliers to us once we have managed their successful claim. And of course our own sales and marketing efforts is reaching out both in East Anglian and beyond.

There are still far too many businesses in the UK who have either never heard of R&D Tax Credits, do not consider their product development to involve an aspect of research and development or who are distrustful of a scheme initiated by the government and managed by HMRC.

We are on a mission to educate, inform and generally raise awareness of the R&D Tax Credit scheme and the benefits that a successful claim can bring to a business. We continue to invest in growing our team to help achieve that objective.

The technical team

Investing heavily in mapping a CRM to our all-through business process, is enabling us to streamline the complex processes involved in making successful R&D Tax Credits claims.

Fiscale now has over 150 clients and managing their R&D Tax Credits affairs has necessitated the recruitment of three new Claims Administrators and a Tax Director over the course of 2016.

Joseph Webster-Davids, Apprentice Claims Administrator

Joseph joined Fiscale in January 2016. He completed his A Levels in Mixed Science, Business, History and Physical Education in 2015 when studying at Joyce Frankland Academy, formerly Newport Free Grammar School.

Joseph is now studying for a Level 4 Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) qualification as part of his Apprenticeship. Joseph's long term ambition is to become a Chartered Tax Advisor so a specialist tax consultancy practice such as Fiscale is an ideal environment for him to hone his forensic skills.

Pieres Flowers, Apprentice Claims Administrator

Pieres is another ex-Castle Manor Academy student. After his A Levels Pieres became an Administration Apprentice for ONE Haverhill and successfully completed an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration.

Discovering a passion for numbers it seemed a natural progression for Pieres to join Fiscale on completion of his apprenticeship with ONE Haverhill. Pieres is continuing his learning by undertaking a Level 4 Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) qualification. He would like to pursue a career in accounting by becoming a fully qualified Tax Advisor.

Bethany Cowling, Apprentice Claims Administrator

Bethany joined Fiscale in September 2016 as an Apprentice Claims Administrator. Bethany is also a former Castle Manor Academy student. She is now completing a Level 2 Business and Administration Apprenticeship with Cambridge Regional College. Bethany has aspirations of becoming a fully qualified Tax Advisor and would like to continue her education by studying for the ATT and CTA exams in the future.

Sasha Talbot, Director, Fiscale (North West) Ltd

Sasha joined Fiscale as the Technical Director for the company's new North West office in November 2016. Sasha started her career in accountancy in 1996 with Grant Thornton and worked within the Rescue and Reorganisation department. She qualified as a chartered certified accountant in 2003 and started to work in the tax department.

Sasha went to work with the corporate tax team at Ensors in 2004 and qualified as a chartered tax advisor in 2005. In 2015, following a career break, Sasha established her own accountancy practice, Talbot Williams.

Sasha is heading up Fiscale's technical hub in the North West to support our growing number of clients in this area.
